India’s Strong Stand: Summons US Diplomat Over Remarks on Arvind Kejriwal’s Arrest

“In a significant move, India summoned a senior US diplomat on Wednesday due to recent remarks made by the US State Department about Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Reports indicate that the Ministry of External Affairs in Delhi called in Gloria Berbena, the Acting Deputy Chief of Mission for the US. The meeting between the two parties lasted for approximately 40 minutes.”

The MEA emphasized in its statement that failure to respect the internal affairs of others by countries like the United States would establish “unhealthy precedents.” “In diplomacy, states should honor the sovereignty and internal affairs of others. This duty is especially crucial among fellow democracies. Otherwise, it risks establishing unhealthy precedents,” stated the MEA.

“India’s legal processes operate under an independent judiciary dedicated to fair and timely outcomes. Questioning this undermines the system,” it further remarked.

Last week, India summoned a German diplomat in protest against remarks made by the German government regarding the arrest of the Delhi Chief Minister. Sebastian Fischer, spokesperson for Germany’s foreign office, had stated in a press conference, “We assume and expect that the standards relating to the independence of the judiciary and basic democratic principles will also be applied in this case.”

India later summoned Georg Enzweiler, the deputy chief of mission at the German embassy, and conveyed a strong protest regarding the remarks.

It’s important to note that India emphasized the arrest of the Delhi Chief Minister as solely an “internal matter” and stated that “no foreign country should lecture New Delhi on what to do and what not to do.”
