BJP and SAD Alliance for Punjab Lok Sabha Seats

In a significant development, leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) have confirmed ongoing discussions for a potential alliance in Punjab ahead of the crucial 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The rekindling of talks between the two parties comes amid speculation and anticipation within the political landscape of Punjab, where voting for 13 Lok Sabha seats is scheduled for June 1.

Senior BJP spokesperson SS Channy affirmed the ongoing discussions, noting that the Akali Dal core committee meeting on March 22 would play a pivotal role in determining the alliance fate. Channy highlighted that the final decision rests with the BJP high command, signaling the importance of the impending meeting.

Echoing similar sentiments, SAD General Secretary Dr Daljit Singh Cheema confirmed that various pertinent issues, including the election alliance, would be deliberated upon during the core committee meeting. Dr Cheema hinted at the possibility of forging an alliance with a “like-minded” political entity, underscoring the strategic considerations in the decision-making process.

Sources close to SAD revealed initial reservations regarding the alliance, citing unresolved concerns such as MSP framework and Sikh prisoners release. However, the evolving political landscape and strategic imperatives are likely driving the parties towards a potential realignment.

The prospect of a BJP-SAD alliance has sparked reactions from Punjab political circles, with Leader of the Opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa expressing apprehensions. Bajwa cautioned against potential repercussions for SAD, particularly regarding its stance on farmers issues and religious matters.

In the backdrop of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, where Congress secured a majority of seats in Punjab, the resurgence of BJP-SAD talks underscores shifting political dynamics in the state. The 2020 severance of ties between SAD and BJP over contentious farm laws, followed by subsequent events, including law repeal and SAD’s continued engagement with NDA, sets the stage for a recalibration of political alliances in Punjab.

As the countdown to the Lok Sabha polls begins, the unfolding developments between BJP and Akali Dal hold significant implications for Punjab’s political landscape.
