India Test-Fires Agni-5 Missile with MIRV Technology, PM Modi Praises DRDO Scientists

India successfully conducted the first flight test of the indigenous Agni-5 missile equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology, marking a significant milestone in the country’s defense capabilities.

The test, known as Mission Divyastra, enables a single missile to deploy multiple warheads at different locations, showcasing India’s growing technological prowess in the defense sector. The project director, a woman, played a significant role in the development of the missile, highlighting the substantial contribution of women in the project.

With this successful test, India joins a select group of nations with MIRV capability, enhancing its strategic defense capabilities.

The MIRV technology allows a missile to carry multiple warheads, including nuclear ones, each capable of targeting different locations. Developed in the 1960s, MIRVs enable missiles to deliver multiple warheads to various targets.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) scientists for their achievement, expressing pride in India’s indigenous missile technology.

The Agni series of rockets, meaning “fire” in Sanskrit, has been developed as part of India’s guided missile development project launched in 1983. While earlier versions like Agni-I and II were focused on shorter ranges with Pakistan in mind, later versions like Agni-5 reflect India’s strategic shift towards addressing threats from countries like China.

The successful test underscores India’s commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities and ensuring national security in the face of evolving regional and global challenges.
