The Indian government, through the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B), has implemented stringent measures to address concerns regarding inappropriate digital content. Taking action under the Information Technology Act, 2000, they have blocked 18 OTT platforms, 19 websites, 10 apps, and 57 social media handles known for disseminating obscene and vulgar material. This decisive move reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring societal values are upheld and the well-being of its citizens is protected, emphasizing the importance of responsible media regulation in the digital age.
The name of the banned OTT platforms include Dreams Films, Voovi, Yessma, Uncut Adda, Tri Flicks, X Prime, Neon X VIP, Besharams, Hunters, Rabbit, Xtramood, Nuefliks, MoodX, Mojflix, Hot Shots VIP, Fugi, Chikooflix, and Prime Play.
The government said that a lot of the content on these platforms was inappropriate, showing women in a bad way and including sexual acts in wrong situations like relationships between teachers and students or within families. They also said that some content had sexual jokes and scenes that didn’t have any importance to the story.
These platforms were popular among viewers. One app that got banned had more than 10 million downloads, and two others had over 5 million on the Google Play Store. Besides, they used social media to share trailers, scenes, and links to attract more people. Together, their social media accounts had over 3.2 million followers.
