This remarkable achievement marks the completion of the under-river tunnel in the Kolkata Metro’s East-West Corridor, linking Howrah Maidan to Esplanade.

The tunnel, spanning 520 meters beneath the Hooghly River, will drastically reduce travel time, covering the distance in just 45 seconds. Additionally, PM Modi will inaugurate the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay and Taratala-Majerhat sections of the Kolkata metro, aiming to ease road traffic and provide seamless connectivity.

Notably, the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade metro line features the country’s first transportation tunnel beneath a mighty river, while the Howrah Metro Station, situated 33 meters below the surface, stands as a testament to engineering marvel.

This momentous occasion is a long-awaited gift to the people of Kolkata, as stated by Kausik Mitra, Chief Public Relations Officer of Kolkata Metro Railway. Moreover, PM Modi will lay the foundation stone for the extension of the Pune Metro Rail project Phase 1 between Pimpri-Chinchwad Metro and Nigdi.

The inauguration will also witness PM Modi launching multiple connectivity projects worth Rs 15,400 crores in Kolkata, reinforcing the government’s commitment to bolstering infrastructure and enhancing transportation networks.
