India First Underwater Metro Service Opens to the Public in Kolkata

Kolkata witnesses history as the country first underwater metro line commences public operations, delighting commuters with its maiden voyage. Passengers express joy and patriotism, chanting slogans of ‘Vande Bharat’ and ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ as they embark on this remarkable journey.

The inaugural train sets off from Howrah Maidan and Esplanade stations simultaneously, marking the debut of the underwater section beneath the Hooghly River. Spanning 520 meters, this engineering marvel astounds passengers with its innovative design and technology.

Decorated with blue LED lights, the tunnel beneath the river provides a unique experience, symbolizing the spirit of urban innovation. Operating on weekdays with a frequency of 12 to 15 minutes, the underwater metro promises convenient and efficient travel for commuters.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Kolkata’s metro operations on March 6, underscoring the government’s commitment to modernizing urban infrastructure. The inauguration included the unveiling of several connectivity projects, reflecting India’s progress towards enhanced mobility and connectivity.

With the launch of the underwater metro and other key initiatives, Kolkata takes a significant step towards shaping the future of urban transportation, setting a new standard for sustainable and innovative metro systems nationwide.
