Indian Navy to Set Up Strategic Base in Proximity to Maldives

HDFC LIFE C2PS
India's navy is increasing its presence on key islands near the Maldives by opening a new base just before the Maldives begins sending Indian forces home. The relationship between India and the Maldives has soured since President Mohamed Muizzu, who is seen as pro-China, came to power last year and pledged to remove Indian forces. India is concerned about China's growing influence in the Maldives, which sits on important international shipping routes. The navy said the new base, opening on March 6 on India's Lakshadweep islands, will help monitor the area better. Muizzu has asked India to withdraw 89 security personnel who operate reconnaissance aircraft from the Maldives. The first group is expected to leave by March 10, with all leaving within two months. The new base, located on the island of Minicoy, will strengthen India's security infrastructure in the region. It will also enhance efforts against piracy and drug trafficking, as part of India's policy to improve security on strategically important islands like Lakshadweep.
