In a significant move to strengthen its tourism sector and position itself as a premium travel destination, Andhra Pradesh has taken a major step toward introducing ultra-luxury boat cruises at key river and backwater locations in the state. The initiative is expected to elevate tourism experiences while generating employment and boosting local economies.

Private operators have expressed interest in operating five ultra-luxury boats for tourists at two prominent locations — the Vijayawada Berm Park stretch along the Krishna River and the serene backwaters near Suryalanka Beach in Bapatla district.

Preliminary Approvals Granted by APSTDC

The Andhra Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (APSTDC) has granted preliminary approvals to the private operators for the proposed cruise services. Officials stated that the approvals are part of a broader plan to diversify tourism offerings and attract high-value domestic and international tourists.

As part of the project, APSTDC will construct five jetties across the two locations and provide essential electricity infrastructure to support the cruise operations.

Focus on Infrastructure and Safety Compliance

Before construction of the boats begins, the operators are required to obtain mandatory approvals from the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI). These approvals will cover design specifications, safety standards, and navigation compliance.

Tourism officials said that strict adherence to safety, environmental, and operational norms would be ensured to make the project sustainable and globally competitive.

Premium Tourism Experience

The ultra-luxury boats are expected to offer world-class amenities, including fine dining, panoramic decks, climate-controlled interiors, and curated tourism experiences. These cruises are aimed at tapping into the growing demand for experiential and luxury travel within India.

The Vijayawada Berm Park stretch offers scenic river views and urban accessibility, while the Suryalanka Beach backwaters provide a tranquil coastal ecosystem, making both locations ideal for premium cruise tourism.

Boost to Local Economy and Employment

Officials highlighted that the project would create direct and indirect employment opportunities, including jobs for boat crew, hospitality staff, maintenance workers, tour operators, and local service providers. Ancillary sectors such as transport, food supply, handicrafts, and local tourism services are also expected to benefit.

The initiative aligns with Andhra Pradesh’s strategy to promote tourism as a key driver of economic growth.

Timeline for Operations

According to officials, the ultra-luxury boats are expected to become operational by October 2026, following completion of construction, regulatory approvals, and infrastructure readiness.

The phased implementation is intended to ensure quality, safety, and long-term viability of the project.

Strengthening Andhra Pradesh’s Tourism Vision

The luxury cruise project reflects Andhra Pradesh’s broader vision of leveraging its natural assets — rivers, coastline, and backwaters — to build a sustainable and diversified tourism ecosystem.

By encouraging private participation and investing in public infrastructure, the state aims to position itself as a preferred destination for both leisure and premium tourism.
