Member of Parliament YS Avinash Reddy has undertaken efforts to improve irrigation access in parts of the Kadapa region by supporting small-scale lift irrigation schemes. Areas such as Uppuluru and Kalasapadu, where agricultural lands are located at higher elevations and traditionally lacked reliable irrigation facilities, have been identified for targeted interventions.

Use of MPLAD Funds for Local Infrastructure Development

Officials familiar with the projects said that the lift irrigation schemes were partly funded through the Member of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) funds. These allocations were utilised to develop basic water-lifting infrastructure aimed at drawing water from nearby sources and supplying it to fields that were previously dependent on rainfall alone.

Improving Water Availability for Marginal and Small Farmers

The lift irrigation initiatives are expected to benefit small and marginal farmers who cultivate land in elevated terrain. By ensuring more reliable access to water, the projects help reduce dependence on monsoon rains and support more consistent agricultural activity. Local farmers have noted that improved irrigation can contribute to better crop planning and productivity.

Localized Solutions to Long-Standing Challenges

Unlike large irrigation projects, these schemes focus on localised requirements and practical solutions. Officials stated that such smaller projects are designed to be cost-effective and quicker to implement, addressing specific geographic challenges faced by villages like Uppuluru and Kalasapadu.

Strengthening Agricultural Sustainability

Access to irrigation is a key factor in sustaining agricultural livelihoods in drought-prone regions. By supporting lift irrigation infrastructure, the initiative aligns with broader efforts to strengthen rural resilience and promote sustainable farming practices in areas with uneven terrain and limited natural water flow.

Role of Elected Representatives in Grassroots Development

The projects highlight the role of elected representatives in identifying local needs and directing development funds accordingly. By using MPLAD funds for irrigation infrastructure, Avinash Reddy has focused on addressing practical challenges at the grassroots level, particularly in regions that fall outside the reach of major canal systems.

Ongoing Monitoring and Scope for Expansion

Officials indicated that the performance of the lift irrigation schemes will continue to be monitored, with scope for expansion or replication in other similar areas if outcomes remain positive. Such assessments will help determine future infrastructure priorities in the region.
