In response to concerns raised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal issuance of directives to his ministers while in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena emphasized on Wednesday that the Delhi government will not be administered from jail.
Speaking at the Times Now Summit in New Delhi, Saxena reassured the people of Delhi, stating, “I can assure the people of Delhi that the government will not be run from jail.”
Kejriwal was arrested by the ED last week in connection with the agency’s investigation into the Delhi excise policy case. Despite his arrest, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) affirmed that Kejriwal would not step down as Chief Minister and would continue to govern the city, even if it meant doing so from jail.
While in ED custody, Kejriwal issued two directives to Water Minister Atishi and Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj. One directive addressed complaints regarding water and sewer issues, while the other focused on ensuring the availability of medicines in all mohalla clinics across the city.
On Tuesday, BJP national secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa filed a complaint with the Lt Governor, questioning the authenticity of the letterhead used by Kejriwal to issue directives. Sirsa argued that since Kejriwal was in custody, he lacked the legal capacity to issue governance directives without court permission.
Sirsa urged Saxena to take appropriate action to address the ongoing crisis sparked by Kejriwal’s directives.
The assurance from Delhi Lt Governor comes amid growing concerns and criticism surrounding the governance of the city in the wake of Kejriwal’s arrest and his subsequent actions while in custody.
