Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) MP A Ganeshamoorthy, who attempted suicide by consuming pesticide a few days ago, passed away early Thursday morning due to a cardiac arrest. The 76-year-old lawmaker, representing Erode constituency in Tamil Nadu, was rushed to a private hospital after the suicide attempt but succumbed to cardiac arrest during treatment.
Ganeshamoorthy, elected on a DMK ticket in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, developed complications on March 24, prompting his admission to a private hospital in Erode. Subsequently, he was shifted to the ICU and put on a ventilator after revealing to his family that he had consumed pesticide.
Despite efforts, his condition deteriorated, leading to his transfer to a private hospital in Coimbatore. Unfortunately, he could not be revived and was pronounced dead around 5 am.
The body has been handed over to the authorities for autopsy, and after the procedure, it will be taken to Kumaravalasu village for burial, as per MDMK sources.
Ganeshamoorthy, who had previously won Lok Sabha elections from Palani in 1998 and Erode in 2009, leaves behind a son and a daughter.
The news of his demise has saddened political circles in Tamil Nadu, highlighting the challenges faced by public representatives and the importance of addressing mental health issues in society.
