In a significant development, more than 600 lawyers from across India, including prominent legal figures like Harish Salve and Pinky Anand, have penned a letter to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, expressing their concerns over attempts by a “vested interest group” to influence the judiciary.

The lawyers, in their letter, highlighted the alarming trend of this group employing pressure tactics to sway judicial outcomes, particularly in cases involving political leaders and corruption charges. They emphasized that such actions pose a grave threat to the democratic principles and erode public trust in the judicial system.

The letter, titled “Threat to Judiciary,” sheds light on various tactics employed by the interest group, including the propagation of false narratives aimed at discrediting ongoing judicial proceedings and undermining public confidence in the courts. The lawyers condemned the selective criticism or praise of court decisions based on political agendas, labeling it as a “my way or the highway” approach.

Moreover, the letter raised concerns about the group’s peddling of conspiracy theories such as “bench fixing” and noted the disturbing trend of “political flip-flopping,” where politicians accuse individuals of corruption only to defend them vigorously in court when the verdict doesn’t align with their interests.

The lawyers stressed the urgency of the matter, particularly in light of the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where certain elements are reportedly attempting to influence judges and manipulate judicial decisions through social media propaganda.

In their appeal to the Supreme Court, the lawyers urged the judiciary to stand firm against such attacks and take proactive measures to safeguard the integrity and independence of the courts from external pressures and manipulations.

The letter underscores the critical importance of maintaining the impartiality and credibility of the judiciary in upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for all citizens, regardless of their political affiliations or vested interests.
