The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for strict action against senior Congress leader Supriya Shrinate following a contentious social media post targeting actor Kangana Ranaut. Ranaut, who is contesting from the Mandi Lok Sabha seat in Himachal Pradesh, was the subject of the post, prompting backlash from the BJP.
In response to the post, Kangana Ranaut emphasized the importance of respecting the dignity of women and called for an end to derogatory language. Union Minister Smriti Irani expressed support for Ranaut stance, praising her resilience in the face of adversity.
Amit Malviya, head of BJP’s national information and technology department, condemned Shrinate comments as “obnoxious” and stressed the need for accountability within the Congress party. Similarly, BJP’s Shehzad Poonawalla called for Shrinate immediate expulsion from the party, describing her remarks as “despicable.”
In an attempt to address the controversy, Supriya Shrinate clarified that the objectionable post was made by someone else who had access to her social media accounts. She distanced herself from the comments and attributed the incident to a parody account.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) also condemned the “lewd and derogatory remarks” and urged the Election Commission of India to take strict action against Shrinate. The NCW emphasized the importance of upholding respect and dignity for all women.
Despite Shrinate clarification, BJP leader Shazia Ilmi continued to question the Congress leadership’s response, calling for decisive action against Shrinate. Ilmi criticized the silence of senior Congress leaders on the issue and emphasized the need to address derogatory remarks made against women in politics.
The controversy highlights the ongoing tensions between political parties and underscores the significance of responsible behavior on social media platforms, especially during election periods.
