Misplaced, misinformed, unwarranted: India reacts on US concern on CAA

India has responded sharply to the United States’ expression of concern regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The US stated that it is “closely monitoring” the implementation of the controversial law, sparking a strong reaction from India.

The Ministry of External Affairs has termed the US stance as “misplaced, misinformed, and unwarranted.” According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the CAA is an internal matter for India, emphasizing the country’s commitment to human rights by offering refuge to persecuted minorities.

The comments from India come in the wake of the US State Department’s statement on the CAA, which has stirred debate and drawn attention to the ongoing tensions between the two nations over domestic policies.

The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson emphasized that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) aims to give citizenship rather than take it away. The CAA, according to the spokesperson, tackles the issue of statelessness, upholds human dignity, and supports human rights. The rules for implementing this law were announced on March 11, four years after it was passed. This move opens the door for granting citizenship to undocumented migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who are not Muslims.

The spokesperson dismissed concerns about mistreatment of minorities, stating that the CAA aims to assist those in need, not for political gain. They also advised against lectures from those who don’t fully understand India’s diverse traditions and the region’s history after partition. Instead, they urged India’s partners and well-wishers to appreciate the good intentions behind this initiative.
