In a significant development, Gyanesh Kumar and SS Sandhu are set to be appointed as the new Election Commissioners for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024, according to sources close to the matter.
The decision was made during a committee meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and attended by key members, including Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
Following the retirement of Anup Chandra Pandey and the unexpected resignation of Arun Goel, the Election Commission faced vacancies. However, with the selection of Gyanesh Kumar and SS Sandhu, these vacancies are expected to be filled soon.
The appointment comes just days before the Election Commission is scheduled to announce the election schedule for the Lok Sabha polls. Arun Goel’s resignation, which was accepted by President Droupadi Murmu, led to Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar becoming the sole member of the poll body.
It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time the Election Commission has faced such changes. Earlier, in August 2020, another EC, Ashok Lavasa, had resigned from his position due to various disagreements with the decisions taken by the Election Commission during the previous Lok Sabha polls.
With the new appointments, the Election Commission aims to ensure smooth conduct of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and uphold the democratic process in the country.
