The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has stirred the political arena with its second list of Lok Sabha election candidates, dropping 28 sitting MPs from their respective constituencies. The list, comprising 72 candidates, includes nine Union ministers and three former chief ministers.
According to reports, approximately 21% of sitting MPs have not been fielded again from their respective seats. In the first list, 33 MPs were replaced out of 195 candidates, while the second list saw 30 MPs being dropped. Overall, 140 sitting MPs have been repeated, with 67 not receiving tickets, including two who opted out of contesting.
Significant changes have been witnessed in various states. In Delhi, except for one sitting MP, all others have been replaced. Maharashtra has announced candidates for 20 out of 23 seats, with notable names like Nitin Gadkari, Piyush Goyal, and Raosaheb Danve in the fray. Gujarat and Haryana also witnessed notable omissions, with only a few sitting MPs being repeated.
Telangana has seen a majority of candidates being defectors from other parties, while Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka witnessed changes in their candidate line-ups as well.
Overall, the BJP’s move to drop a significant number of sitting MPs reflects its strategy of rejuvenation and recalibration ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
