Pawan Singh, the Bhojpuri star and former BJP candidate for West Bengal’s Asansol constituency, has declared his intention to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections despite withdrawing from the Asansol candidacy due to controversy surrounding his songs.
Following Singh’s inclusion in the BJP’s initial candidate list, concerns were raised over the content of his songs, particularly references deemed objectionable to Bengali women. Despite withdrawing from the Asansol race, Singh affirmed his commitment to contesting the elections, citing a promise to his society, people, and mother.
Singh’s initial candidacy sparked criticism from various quarters, including West Bengal Minister and TMC leader Babul Supriyo, who accused the BJP of insensitivity towards Bengali women. BJP leader Tathagata Roy also called for a reassessment of the Asansol candidate amidst the controversy.
In response to the backlash, Singh announced his decision to decline the Asansol candidacy on March 3, expressing gratitude to the BJP leadership. Subsequently, he met with BJP national president JP Nadda in New Delhi.
While Singh’s candidacy in Asansol aimed to challenge veteran actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha, reports suggest that the BJP requested Singh’s withdrawal to mitigate the controversy amid the party’s focus on other political issues.
Despite the setback in Asansol, Singh remains determined to participate in the electoral process, seeking blessings and cooperation from the public to fulfill his commitment to society and his motherland.
