Nayab Singh Saini, the newly appointed Chief Minister of Haryana, has secured a vote of confidence in the state assembly. This follows the resignation of former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, leading to the breakup of the BJP’s alliance with the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP).
Saini, who assumed office after Khattar’s surprise resignation, garnered support from 48 MLAs, demonstrating a majority in the assembly. The BJP and JJP severed ties amid disagreements over seat-sharing for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
During the floor test, despite the JJP’s directive for 10 MLAs to abstain from voting, four JJP members defied the party whip and participated in the assembly session. Additionally, an Independent MLA joined the dissenting group.
The BJP, with 41 members in the 90-seat assembly, received backing from six independents and a lone MLA from the Haryana Lokhit Party, securing a comfortable majority. Meanwhile, the Congress holds 30 seats, while the Indian National Lok Dal has one.
In a notable absence, former home minister Anil Vij did not attend Saini’s swearing-in ceremony and has not been included in the new Cabinet. Khattar hinted at Vij’s potential candidacy in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
The JJP announced its intention to contest all 10 Lok Sabha seats and 90 assembly constituencies in Haryana independently, raising questions about the future of its alliance with the BJP.
The BJP and JJP formed a coalition government in 2019 after neither party secured a majority in the assembly elections. However, recent political maneuvers have led to speculation about the stability of this alliance.
Critics, including Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda, have interpreted these developments as signs of defeat for the BJP and JJP, calling for early assembly elections and suggesting the imposition of President’s Rule in the state.
