In a significant move ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election, the Congress party has announced its first list of 39 candidates. Among the prominent names featured in the list are Rahul Gandhi, who will be contesting from Wayanad, former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, and Shashi Tharoor from Thiruvananthapuram.
The list also includes DK Suresh contesting from Bangalore Rural and K Sudhakaran from Kannur. Congress general secretary KC Venugopal will be contesting from Alappuzha.
Out of the 39 candidates, 15 are from the general caste while 24 are from SC/ST/minority communities. The decision regarding Rahul Gandhi contesting from a second seat, possibly Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, is yet to be announced.
The candidates were finalized after deliberation in the central election committee meeting led by president Mallikarjun Kharge. Rahul Gandhi participated in the meeting via Zoom.
Speaking on the occasion, KC Venugopal highlighted the party’s aggressive election campaign and announced upcoming rallies and initiatives. Shashi Tharoor expressed gratitude for being given the opportunity to defend his seat and emphasized his commitment to a fair campaign.
Regarding Delhi seats, Venugopal stated that candidates will be selected based solely on their potential to win, without any internal conflicts.
