Congress Central Election Committee, led by party president Mallikarjun Kharge, will convene on March 7 to decide on candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in 2024. Jairam Ramesh, the party’s general secretary for communications, confirmed the meeting’s schedule, which will include discussions on potential candidates from various constituencies across the country.
The committee comprises key figures like former party presidents Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, along with AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, Ambika Soni, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, and T S Singhdeo, among others. Following the meeting, the party is expected to release its first list of candidates to kickstart the election campaign.
Meanwhile, the BJP has already announced its first list of candidates, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Among the prominent Congress leaders, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is likely to contest from Rae Bareli, while Rahul Gandhi is expected to run from both Amethi and Wayanad constituencies.
The Congress party is part of the INDIA bloc of opposition parties for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The BJP has set ambitious targets of winning over 370 seats independently and aiming for 400+ seats in alliance with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, held in seven phases from April 11 to May 19, the BJP secured a landslide victory under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, winning 303 seats in the 543-member House.
