In a significant development, the Calcutta High Court has directed the West Bengal government to transfer custody of suspended TMC leader Sheikh Shajahan to the CBI by 4:15 pm. This order follows the CBI’s claim that the Bengal CID failed to comply with the High Court’s previous directive regarding Shajahan’s custody in connection with the January 5 attack on Enforcement Directorate officials in Sandeshkhali.

The CBI sought contempt proceedings against the government, alleging non-compliance with the court’s order. Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, representing the ED, emphasized that there was no stay on the High Court order and termed the government’s actions as contemptuous.

The counsel for the CBI informed the court that the agency had communicated the High Court’s order to all relevant officials in West Bengal. Despite this, the government cited a pending matter before the Supreme Court and refused to hand over Shajahan’s custody.

The High Court’s stern directive comes after it criticized the Bengal Police for being “totally biased” and transferred the investigation into the Sandeshkhali attack to the CBI. The West Bengal government has approached the Supreme Court against this order, seeking an urgent listing of its plea.

This development underscores the ongoing legal battle between the CBI and the West Bengal government, highlighting the complexities surrounding the transfer of Shajahan’s custody amid legal proceedings.
