The Supreme Court has granted permission for the withdrawal of a petition related to the farmer protests, filed in the wake of the ‘Delhi Chalo’ movement initiated by farmers in February. The petition sought directions for the Centre to consider the demands of protesting farmers regarding Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops. The Court cautioned against filing petitions on such “serious” issues solely for publicity. The bench emphasized the importance of approaching the court with commitment and seriousness regarding such matters. The petitioner, claiming to be from The Sikh Chamber of Commerce, withdrew the petition, acknowledging subsequent developments. The Court suggested approaching the Punjab and Haryana High Court, where similar matters were pending, to address grievances. The petition raised concerns about the handling of the protests, compensation for deceased farmers’ families, and various issues related to MSP and agricultural reforms recommended by MS Swaminathan.
