Scrub typhus is caused by the bacterium Orientia tsutsugamushi and is transmitted through the bite of infected chigger mites. These mites are commonly found in areas with dense vegetation such as fields, bushes, and grassy regions. Health experts have emphasised that scrub typhus does not spread from person to person, reducing the risk of community transmission. However, exposure in rural and semi-urban areas remains a concern during certain seasons.

Common symptoms of scrub typhus include high fever, headache, muscle pain, rash, and the presence of an eschar—a dark scab at the site of the mite bite. If left untreated, the infection can lead to serious complications such as organ failure or pneumonia. Medical professionals have stated that early diagnosis and prompt treatment with antibiotics, including doxycycline, result in good recovery outcomes for most patients.

Health officials are currently reviewing the reported deaths to determine how many were directly caused by scrub typhus, as several cases involved multiple underlying conditions. Districts such as Chittoor have reported higher case numbers, prompting closer monitoring and targeted public health interventions. Data from the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP-IHIP) portal shows that Andhra Pradesh recorded 1,689 cases in 2024, which declined to 1,566 in 2025. Similar downward trends have been observed in neighbouring states, including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana. Officials have noted that the apparent increase in reported cases in recent years is largely due to improved diagnostic capacity and systematic reporting rather than an actual rise in infections.
