A senior citizen was found dead after a massive fire broke out in one of the coaches of the Ernakulam Express during the early hours of Monday, raising fresh concerns over railway safety and emergency preparedness. The incident occurred when Train No. 18189, travelling from Tatanagar to Ernakulam, was passing near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh under the Vijayawada Division of the South Central Railway (SCR).
According to officials, the fire originated in the B1 coach of the train and was first noticed by the loco pilot, who immediately applied emergency brakes and brought the train to a halt at Elamanchili Railway Station. Despite the prompt action, the flames had already spread to the adjacent B2 coach by the time the train stopped, necessitating swift containment measures by railway authorities and local emergency services.
Emergency Response Triggered After Fire Detection
Railway officials stated that the alertness of the loco pilot played a crucial role in preventing further escalation of the incident. Upon detecting smoke and fire, the train was halted without delay, and emergency protocols were activated. Anakapalli Superintendent of Police Tuhin Sinha confirmed that the body of a senior citizen passenger was recovered after the fire was brought under control. Affected Coaches Detached as Precautionary Measure

To minimize inconvenience and ensure continuity of travel, Indian Railways arranged for three empty coaches to be attached to the train formation at Samalkot. Meanwhile, passengers from the affected coaches were shifted safely to Samalkot Railway Station through specially arranged bus services, reflecting a coordinated response aimed at safeguarding passenger welfare.
