Bicholim police have registered an offence against two unidentified individuals following a complaint of robbery involving deception and impersonation. The accused, a man and a woman, allegedly posed as police personnel and robbed a woman of her mangalsutra, highlighting a concerning pattern of confidence trick crimes targeting unsuspecting citizens.
Victim’s Complaint Details the Incident
According to the complaint filed at the Bicholim police station by Mohini Naik, a resident of Piligao, the incident occurred while she was travelling towards Gaonkarwada to catch a bus. She was intercepted by the accused, who presented themselves as police officials and questioned her movement, creating an atmosphere of authority and urgency.
Accused Used Fear Tactics to Gain Trust
Naik stated that the accused took her to an isolated location and claimed that there had been increased incidents of theft in the area. Under the pretext of ensuring the safety of her gold ornaments, they instructed her to remove her mangalsutra. Exploiting fear and trust in law enforcement, the duo convinced her that the ornament would be safeguarded temporarily.
Deception Discovered After Returning Home
After wrapping the mangalsutra in a piece of paper, the accused handed it back to the complainant and allowed her to leave. However, upon reaching home, Naik discovered that the paper contained a stone instead of the gold ornament. The mangalsutra was reportedly valued at approximately Rs 6 lakh, representing a significant personal loss.
Police Investigation Underway
Bicholim police have begun investigations to identify and trace the accused, relying on witness accounts, possible CCTV footage, and movement patterns in the area. Officials are examining whether similar incidents have occurred nearby, suggesting a broader pattern of impersonation-driven thefts.
Public Advisory and Safety Concerns
Police officials have urged citizens, particularly women and senior citizens, to remain cautious and verify the identity of anyone claiming to be law enforcement personnel. Authorities reiterated that police officers do not demand the removal of jewellery under any circumstances and encouraged immediate reporting of suspicious behaviour.
