More than a century after Moto Polo was first recognised globally, the high-speed motorcycle sport made its official entry into India at the recently concluded Motoverse, hosted at Vagator Hill Top in Goa. The introduction of this unique motorsport was led by British brand Malle London, widely known for motorcycle adventure events and credited with reviving Moto Polo in 2017.
What Is Moto Polo?
Moto Polo is played between two teams of five riders, including one substitute. Participants remain seated on their motorcycles and manoeuvre a large leather ball across the field using their feet and the bike’s front tyre. The game consists of two 10-minute halves where teams aim to score maximum goals. The sport is known for its intensity, requiring perfect coordination, control, and quick decision-making.
Speaking to The Statesman, Malle London co-founder Jonny Cazzola described it as “a chaotic but thrilling sport where speed, dust, and precision merge to create an electrifying gameplay experience.”
Historic Entry Into India
The sport’s debut took place during the inaugural Indian Moto Polo Championship at Motoverse Goa, marking a first in India’s motorsport landscape. Four Indian teams from Delhi, Ladakh, Bengaluru, and Goa competed in the championship event, beginning with two heats, followed by semi-finals and a grand final.
The championship was structured differently from the traditional format. Rather than participating as one official Malle team, each Malle player captained an Indian regional team to encourage wider participation.
Strong India–UK Motorsport Collaboration
Cazzola acknowledged the crucial role played by Royal Enfield, saying:
“We’ve been working with Royal Enfield for nearly ten years. They have supported our races and rallies with rally bikes and logistics, forming the backbone of our events.”
The collaboration aims to expand competitive riding culture in India, offering exposure to niche and internationally recognised motorsports.
Rising Enthusiasm Among Indian Riders
Despite most participants experiencing the sport for the first time, performance levels were impressive. Training sessions and matches witnessed high enthusiasm and strong competitive spirit.
Cazzola described the interactions with Indian riders as “truly special,” praising their adaptability and passion.
Expanding Participation: Inclusion of Women Riders
One noted challenge was the absence of women participants in the inaugural edition. Discussions with Royal Enfield are underway to ensure female participation from 2026.
“In England, we have a strong female riding community and dedicated race classes for women. We’re confident that next year we’ll see women competing on the field,” Cazzola confirmed.
A New Future for Motorsport in India
The introduction of Moto Polo is expected to:
- Create new opportunities for competitive motorcycling
- Strengthen India’s presence in international riding events
- Encourage youth participation in motorsports
- Position Goa as a hub for motorcycle adventure tourism
Motoverse’s successful hosting sets the foundation for future editions with larger participation and potential expansion into national leagues. Moto Polo’s entry into India marks a defining moment for Indian motorsports. With growing enthusiasm, institutional support, and future plans for inclusivity, the sport has potential to inspire a new generation of competitive riders and redefine motorsport culture in the country.
