Pioneering 16-Way Waste Segregation with Expansion to 30 Categories
One of the most innovative aspects of the reform is the introduction of 16-way waste segregation in Panaji, designed to promote scientific waste processing instead of dumping material into landfills. The government is now working on plans to expand this model to 30-way segregation, aligning with global environmental best practices.
This system enables efficient separation of plastics, glass, paper, metals, wet waste, biomedical waste and more, significantly improving recycling output and reducing ecological impact. Rane emphasized that advanced segregation is essential to protect Goa’s fragile coastal ecosystem and tourism economy.
Cleanliness Ranking & Financial Incentives for Municipalities
In order to encourage healthy competition and consistent performance, the state has introduced a cleanliness ranking initiative for local bodies. Municipalities demonstrating strong waste-management standards will be rewarded with development incentives worth up to ₹2 crore.
This performance-linked investment strategy is expected to accelerate innovation among civic bodies and strengthen Goa’s commitment to becoming one of India’s cleanest states. Officials stated that this model empowers communities and creates measurable improvement benchmarks.
Supporting Sanitation Workers With Healthcare & Welfare Measures
Beyond infrastructure reform, Vishwajit Rane has placed emphasis on the welfare of frontline sanitation workers, recognizing their crucial contribution. Regular medical checkups at GMC and training support are part of the initiative to improve working conditions, safety, and dignity for those responsible for maintaining public hygiene.
