Cyclone Montha, which affected coastal Andhra Pradesh with intense rainfall and strong winds, has weakened into a deep depression after crossing inland. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that the system is moving north-northwestward toward southern Chhattisgarh while losing strength, bringing moderate to heavy rainfall in parts of northern Andhra Pradesh.
Heavy Rainfall and Local Disruptions Reported
Several districts across coastal Andhra Pradesh experienced continuous rain, leading to localized flooding, power outages, and traffic disruptions. Rural areas near river basins and low-lying regions witnessed temporary waterlogging, prompting authorities to initiate immediate drainage measures.
The state’s disaster response teams have been deployed to ensure public safety and to manage emergency evacuations where required. Fishermen were earlier advised to stay away from the sea due to rough conditions, which are expected to gradually subside as the system weakens.
Casualties and Property Loss Under Review
Preliminary reports suggest two lives were lost in separate incidents linked to the heavy rain and wind conditions. Damage to agricultural fields, homes, and public infrastructure is being assessed by district authorities. The administration has begun restoring electricity and road connectivity in rural belts where infrastructure was disrupted by the cyclone’s impact.
Meteorological Updates and Forecast
According to the IMD, the remnants of Cyclone Montha are expected to move further inland toward south Chhattisgarh. While the system continues to weaken, intermittent rainfall may persist over the northern and eastern districts of Andhra Pradesh.
Weather experts note that the interaction between Montha’s remnants and the Arabian Sea depression has extended the rainfall period across the region.
Relief and Rehabilitation Efforts in Progress
District administrations are coordinating post-cyclone rehabilitation activities, including the distribution of relief materials, clearing of debris, and ensuring medical assistance in affected areas. Special monitoring cells have been activated to keep track of any emerging risks such as landslides in hilly zones or breaches in minor irrigation tanks. The focus remains on ensuring safety and restoring normal life at the earliest possible pace.
Caution for Citizens and Fishermen
Citizens in coastal and adjoining districts have been advised to stay alert and avoid venturing into flooded zones. IMD continues to maintain a yellow alert for isolated heavy rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds, urging caution for those in exposed areas.
As conditions gradually stabilize, authorities are expected to lift warnings once the depression dissipates fully over land.
