In a major wildlife conservation initiative, Andhra Pradesh has begun the reintroduction of wild buffaloes in the Gundla Brahmeswaram Sanctuary, spanning the Atmakur and Giddalur forest divisions. The introduction will be carried out in three distinct phases, beginning from the lush green forests of Papikondalu and extending towards neighboring regions, including Madhya Pradesh. The move marks a significant step in the state’s commitment to biodiversity restoration and ecological preservation.
Special Enclosure and Monitoring Systems
To ensure the protection and adaptation of the buffaloes, a special 100-acre enclosure is being constructed within the sanctuary. This secure zone will serve as the initial habitat for the reintroduced animals, helping them gradually acclimatize to the natural environment before full release.
Forest officials confirmed that satellite tracking devices will be installed on the buffaloes to monitor their movement, behavior, and health parameters. The monitoring period is expected to last for about a month, after which the buffaloes will be released into the open forest areas. Continuous surveillance will help prevent poaching and ensure that the animals are thriving in their new environment.

The reintroduction program aligns with Andhra Pradesh’s broader mission to strengthen wildlife corridors and rejuvenate native species populations. The current initiative builds on that momentum, combining scientific intervention with community awareness to safeguard wildlife heritage.
