HDFC LIFE C2PS

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, including Prakasam, Bapatla, Krishna, Nellore, West Godavari, Konaseema, and Kakinada, in view of the deep depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal, which is likely to intensify into a Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Montha’ by October 28.

The system, as per IMD’s latest update, lay centered at 5.30 pm on October 26 over the same region  about 670 km west of Port Blair, 720 km east-southeast of Chennai, 780 km southeast of Kakinada, and 790 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam. The depression is expected to move west-northwestwards and intensify further into a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours.

Cyclone Expected to Intensify Further Before Landfall

According to IMD forecasts, Cyclone Montha is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by the morning of October 28, and cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kakinada on the evening or night of the same day.

Wind speeds are expected to range between 90–100 kmph, with gusts up to 110 kmph during landfall. Heavy rainfall and strong winds are likely to impact both coastal and adjoining inland districts, raising concerns over flooding, power disruption, and crop damage.

The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA)has directed local administrations to activate control rooms, ensure stock of emergency supplies, and review evacuation plans in vulnerable coastal areas.

State Government’s Response and Coordination

The Andhra Pradesh government has initiated comprehensive preparedness measures to minimize risks.

District collectors in coastal regions have been instructed to:

  • Evacuate residents from low-lying and flood-prone villages.
  • Set up emporary shelters with food, water, and medical assistance.
  • Keep relief teams, NDRF, and SDRF units ready for rapid response.
  • Ensure uninterrupted communication, electricity, and transport networks.

Chief Secretary and disaster management officials are closely coordinating with the India Meteorological Department, continuously monitoring the cyclone’s path and intensity. Control rooms are functioning round the clock to disseminate real-time information to citizens.

Infrastructure and Public Safety Measures

All departments, including power, irrigation, and revenue, have been placed on alert.

Authorities are taking preventive steps to:

  • Trim trees along highways and near power lines to prevent obstruction.
  • Deploy repair teams with equipment for immediate restoration.
  • Secure boats, fishing harbors, and port facilities at Kakinada, Machilipatnam, and Krishnapatnam.

The Fisheries Department has issued an advisory strictly prohibiting fishermen from venturing into the sea until conditions normalize. Coastal security units have been deployed for patrolling and assisting in evacuation if required.

Anticipated Impact on Agriculture and Coastal Livelihoods

Heavy rainfall and gusty winds may cause flooding in low-lying agricultural fields, particularly in Konaseema, Krishna, and Guntur districts. Officials have advised farmers to take preventive measures such as moving machinery, livestock, and stored produce to safer locations. Fisherfolk communities are being relocated to inland shelters, and local administrations are preparing post-cyclone relief plans to support livelihoods affected by the storm.

Public Advisory and Awareness

The IMD and APSDMA have jointly appealed to citizens to:

  • Follow official advisories and weather bulletins.
  • Avoid travel during heavy rainfall and strong wind hours.
  • Keep essential supplies like drinking water, dry food, flashlights, and first-aid kits ready.
  • Report emergencies like fallen trees or power poles to local control rooms immediately.

Public awareness campaigns through television, radio, and social media are underway to ensure people remain informed and prepared.

Leadership and Governance Perspective

The state leadership has reiterated that protection of life and public welfare remain the top priorities. Officials have been instructed to ensure zero casualties and to expedite post-cyclone relief and rehabilitation. This coordinated, proactive approach highlights Andhra Pradesh’s growing capability in disaster management and climate resilience. The administration’s focus remains on swift evacuation, strong communication, and efficient recovery, ensuring that every citizen receives timely assistance.

 Strengthening Resilience Against Natural Calamities

As Cyclone Montha approaches, Andhra Pradesh stands on alert prepared and organized. With the IMD’s timely warnings, district-level coordination, and efficient disaster management systems, the state is aiming to minimize disruption and safeguard its citizens. The cyclone serves as a reminder of the urgent need for climate resilience, coastal infrastructure upgrades, and community-based preparedness* to face the growing frequency of such extreme weather events. By emphasizing governance, preparedness, and public participation, Andhra Pradesh continues to demonstrate strong leadership in managing natural disasters effectively.
