Andhra Pradesh holds a special place in India’s freedom struggle as the birthplace of Pingali Venkayya, the visionary who designed the Indian Tricolour. Born in Machilipatnam, Venkayya dedicated five years to researching the flags of over 30 countries before conceptualising the design that symbolizes sacrifice (saffron), peace (white), and harmony (green).
His contribution became a cornerstone of India’s national identity. Interestingly, his hometown Machilipatnam also lent its name to “muslin,” the fine cotton fabric once traded with ancient Greeks.
Today, Pingali Venkayya remains a source of immense pride for Andhra Pradesh a symbol of patriotism, creativity, and dedication to India’s unity.
