Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with his Union Council of Ministers, submitted their resignations on Wednesday. The resignation was formally handed to President Droupadi Murmu. “The President accepted the resignation and requested the Prime Minister and the Union Council of Ministers to continue in office until the new government is formed,” stated Rashtrapati Bhavan.

This development followed the announcement of the Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 by the Election Commission of India on Tuesday. The BJP emerged with 240 seats out of 543, while the Congress secured 99 seats. Despite the Lok Sabha’s total of 543 members, votes were counted for 542 seats due to BJP’s Surat candidate Mukesh Dalal’s uncontested election.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is poised to lead the government for a third term, with support from the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which has secured a majority in the Lok Sabha. Although the BJP did not achieve the 272-majority mark, it will depend on its NDA allies to form the government. The election results fell short of the landslide victory anticipated by the BJP-led NDA and suggested by exit polls.
