On Wednesday (March 27), India called in a top US diplomat after Washington commented on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest. The United States repeated its support for “fair and clear legal procedures.” Matthew Miller from the US State Department addressed India’s reaction to the remarks during a press briefing. The State Department said they are watching these events closely.

Miller addressed a question during the State Department briefing regarding India summoning Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Gloria Berbena in Delhi and the freezing of Congress’s bank accounts. He stated, “We are also aware of the Congress’s allegations that tax authorities have frozen some of their bank accounts in a manner that will make it challenging to effectively campaign in the upcoming elections. And we encourage fair, transparent and timely legal processes for each of these issues.”

When asked about India summoning the US diplomat, Miller declined to comment, mentioning “private diplomatic conversations.”

“I’m not going to talk about any private diplomatic conversations. But of course, what we have said publicly is what I just said here, that we encourage fair, transparent and timely legal processes. We don’t think anyone should object to that,” Miller remarked.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Gloria Berbena to its office in Delhi’s South Block, meeting lasted over 30 minutes. MEA objected strongly to US State Department’s remarks on India’s legal proceedings, emphasizing respect for sovereignty in diplomacy. India’s MEA highlighted its independent judiciary’s commitment to fair outcomes and criticized casting doubt on it. Earlier, India summoned German deputy chief of mission over remarks on Kejriwal’s arrest.
