During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the summer of 2020, Dr. Kulvinder Kaur Gill, an Indian-origin physician practicing in Canada, courageously voiced her opposition to government-enforced lockdowns and mandatory vaccination policies. However, her outspoken stance subjected her to legal troubles and substantial legal expenses. Elon Musk has publicly stated his intention to “support” Dr. Gill amidst her legal challenges.
Dr. Gill finds herself entangled in a legal dispute, facing an overwhelming CAD 300,000 (around USD 220,000) in legal fees. Thankfully, X has emerged as a supporter of her cause, pledging to shoulder her financial burdens by covering her expenses.
Dr. Gill’s vocal dissent against COVID-related lockdown measures and vaccination efforts, particularly expressed on Twitter, drew the ire of legacy media outlets and led to harassment. Additionally, she faced censorship from Twitter’s previous management and became the subject of investigations by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Consequently, “cautions” were added to her permanent public record.
“In support of your right to speak,” Musk posted :
In August 2020, Dr. Gill boldly tweeted, “If you have not yet figured out that we don’t need a vaccine, you are not paying attention. #FactsNotFear.” In response, Dr. Gill filed a lawsuit against 23 doctors, journalists, and news outlets, alleging defamation. However, a judge dismissed the lawsuit under anti-SLAPP law, ruling that her aim was to silence her critics. Dr. Gill was then ordered to cover the defendants’ legal expenses.
