This news follows the charging of Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national, by federal prosecutors last November for his role in a foiled plot to assassinate Pannun.
The US Embassy in New Delhi stresses the need for accountability, saying, “We expect the Government of India to be accountable based on the investigation’s findings and regularly seek updates.”
During a Congressional hearing on Wednesday, Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Donald Lu, highlighted the seriousness of the matter, stating, “This is a significant issue between the United States and India. The Department of Justice alleges that an Indian citizen, possibly at the direction of a government official, attempted to kill an American citizen on US soil. We take this matter very seriously and have raised it with India at the highest levels.”
“We’re currently working with India to urge them to hold accountable those responsible for this terrible crime. India has formed a committee to investigate, and we’re asking them to do it quickly and openly to ensure justice,” he said.
Meanwhile, India has expressed concern over the US linking an Indian official to a man charged with plotting to kill a Sikh separatist in the US. India says it will take action based on the findings of a panel investigating the allegations.
