In a remarkable display of maritime prowess, the Indian Navy has successfully intercepted a vessel of Somali pirates, preventing their attempted hijacking of ships off the coast of Somalia. The pirates, who had commandeered a ship three months earlier, were intercepted by an Indian Navy warship in the high seas off the east coast of Somalia.

According to a tweet by an Indian Navy spokesperson, the intercepted vessel, identified as the ex-MV Ruen, had been hijacked by Somali pirates on December 14, 23. It was reported to have sailed out as a pirate ship with intentions of conducting acts of piracy on the high seas. The Indian Navy’s swift response led to the interception of the vessel on March 15.

In the face of imminent action by the Indian Navy, the pirates aboard the vessel opened fire, prompting the warship to retaliate in self-defence and to counter piracy. The Indian Navy emphasized its commitment to maritime security and the safety of seafarers, calling upon the pirates to surrender immediately and release any civilians they may be holding against their will.

This successful operation underscores India’s dedication to combating piracy and upholding international maritime laws. Earlier efforts in this regard include the airborne insertion of Special Forces in the Arabian Sea in February and the thwarting of a piracy attempt on an Iranian-flagged fishing vessel in January, during which 19 Pakistani nationals were rescued.

The Indian Navy’s proactive measures serve as a testament to its resolve in safeguarding maritime interests and ensuring the safety of shipping lanes in the region.
