In a recent session of the United Nations General Assembly, India delivered a scathing response to Pakistan’s envoy, characterizing its comments as repetitive and stagnant. During the assembly, Pakistan Ambassador Munir Akram made references to India’s Ram Mandir in Ayodhya and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), prompting India’s Ambassador to the UN, Ruchira Kamboj, to rebuke Pakistan’s stance.
Kamboj, while addressing the assembly, likened Pakistan’s remarks to a “broken record” that remains static while the world progresses. She expressed disappointment at Pakistan’s limited and misguided perspective, particularly in matters concerning India. The criticism came in response to Akram’s references to the Ram Temple consecration in Ayodhya and the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act.
India’s stance on the CAA, which aims to expedite citizenship for persecuted minorities from neighbouring countries, was highlighted during the session. The rules for the implementation of the controversial act were recently notified, paving the way for granting citizenship to undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.
Furthermore, India abstained from a resolution introduced by Pakistan to combat Islamophobia, which was adopted by the UNGA with 15 nations voting in favour and 44 abstentions, including India, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Ukraine, and the UK. Kamboj emphasized the prevalence of “religiophobia” against various faiths, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Sikhism, and condemned all acts of discrimination based on religion.
The Indian Ambassador underscored the importance of recognizing the challenges faced by non-Abrahamic religions, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Sikhism, which are also subject to religiophobia. She urged for a broader understanding of religious discrimination beyond Abrahamic religions, citing instances of attacks on places of worship belonging to Hindu, Buddhist, and Sikh communities.
India’s firm stance in the UN General Assembly reflects its commitment to defending its interests and advocating for a broader perspective on religious freedom and tolerance on the global stage.
