In a setback for imprisoned former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has declined to step into Pakistan’s current election controversy. Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), had urged the global financial institution to review the February 8 elections before approving a new economic package. Despite this, the IMF has encouraged Pakistan to fairly resolve all electoral disputes.
Former PM Imran Khan, currently in jail, wrote a letter to the IMF, requesting a thorough examination of the poll results before providing any financial assistance to Islamabad. He expressed concerns about the potential consequences of obtaining a loan during such a situation, questioning who would be responsible for repayment and raising worries about an increase in poverty.”
Imran Khan argued that Pakistan needs significant investments to prevent a continuous increase in loans, emphasizing the importance of political stability. The International Monetary Fund (IMF), breaking its silence on PTI’s attempt to involve them in political matters, expressed its willingness to discuss the next medium-term program with the newly elected government. An IMF spokesperson stated that they don’t comment on domestic political matters but encouraged a fair and peaceful resolution of all electoral disputes, highlighting the significance of a stable institutional environment for economic stability and growth. The PTI’s letter, received on February 28, sought IMF’s review of the February 8 elections before approving a new economic package.
