UN Reports Record High: 8,565 Migrant Deaths in 2023

The UN’s migration agency disclosed on March 6 that a staggering 8,565 migrants perished while traversing both land and sea routes across the globe in the previous year. This figure marks the highest death toll since the agency commenced tracking migrant fatalities a decade ago.

Highlighted in the report by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the concerning surge in deaths along the perilous Mediterranean Sea route, where fatalities climbed to 3,129 in 2023, up from 2,411 in the preceding year. Despite this increase, it notably falls short of the record high of 5,136 deaths reported in 2016, during a period marked by significant influxes of refugees, particularly Syrians, Afghans, and others fleeing conflict zones end route to Europe.
