Simona Halep, the former world number one tennis player from Romania, has received a significant reduction in her four-year doping ban from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The ban, which was initially imposed by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) last September due to two separate doping incidents in the previous year, has been reduced to just nine months. Halep, who is a two-time Grand Slam singles champion, appealed the decision to CAS in February, arguing that her positive test was the result of consuming a contaminated supplement and that anomalies in her biological passport were due to recent surgery.
In a statement, Halep expressed her relief and gratitude for the decision, stating that she has always maintained her innocence and belief in a fair process. She emphasized the challenges she faced during the ordeal, including unfounded accusations and significant resources aligned against her. Halep expressed her eagerness to return to the tennis tour and resume her career.
The ITIA has acknowledged the CAS ruling, respecting Halep’s right to appeal. This decision marks the end of a challenging period for Halep, who can now focus on getting back to the sport she loves.
