India Establishes Global Coalition to Protect Big Cat Species

In a landmark move for wildlife conservation, India has inaugurated the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) with the aim of safeguarding seven prominent animal species. This initiative, originally proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Global Tiger Day in 2019 and formally announced on April 9, 2023, marks a significant step forward in global efforts to protect big cats. Comprising a coalition of 96 big cat range countries and interested non-range countries, the IBCA is dedicated to promoting cooperation in various facets of conservation, including knowledge sharing, capacity building, networking, advocacy, finance and resource support, research, technical assistance, education, and awareness. With a primary focus on the conservation of Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Puma, Jaguar, and Cheetah, the alliance underscores India's leadership in wildlife preservation, as five of these species are found within its borders. "The alliance aims to replicate successful conservation practices developed in India in other range countries," stated the Centre, emphasizing India's expertise and commitment in this field. Furthermore, by prioritizing environmental resilience and climate change mitigation, the alliance aims to ensure the sustainable use of natural resources while addressing challenges posed by climate change. The headquarters of the IBCA will be located in India, with the Cabinet allocating Rs 150 crore for its operations over a five-year period from 2023-24 to 2027-28. This funding reflects India's unwavering dedication to wildlife conservation and its acknowledgment of the vital role played by big cats in maintaining ecological balance and supporting communities dependent on these ecosystems.
