BREAKING: New Zealand set to scrap world’s first law banning tobacco sale to youth today

HDFC LIFE C2PS
The New Zealand government has announced its intention to repeal a world-first law banning tobacco sales for future generations. Originally set to take effect from July, the stringent anti-tobacco regulations would have prohibited sales to individuals born after January 1, 2009, mandated a reduction in nicotine content in tobacco products, and drastically decreased the number of tobacco retailers. The decision to repeal the law, confirmed by the newly elected coalition government, is being implemented urgently, bypassing public consultation as previously announced. Associate Health Minister Casey Costello emphasized the government's commitment to reducing smoking but indicated a shift in regulatory strategy to discourage the habit and minimize associated harm. Costello also revealed plans to present a package of measures to the cabinet aimed at aiding smoking cessation, along with tightened regulations on vaping to deter youth uptake. However, the decision to repeal the law has faced significant criticism over its potential adverse impact on public health outcomes, particularly among Maori and Pasifika communities who have higher smoking rates. Researchers, including Janet Hoek from Otago University, have denounced the repeal, arguing that it disregards robust research evidence supporting the legislation's efficacy in increasing smoking cessation rates and preventing youth smoking initiation. #INTERNATIONALGOSSIP
